Is Your Security Flawed?

AhnlabsAhnlabs

It is interesting to note that very few people seem to see the significant failures in security that surrounds us. These failures are not limited to any specific type, such as physical security or computer security. They are systemic, potent and enduring. Most of the efforts that have been made in security just do not work well enough to stop a real threat. In fact, most efforts do not even address the first mover advantage that most attacks have.

Here are some examples of systemic failures:

  1. Physical security that relies upon mechanical keys and locks.
  2. Physical security that relies upon human guards at gateposts. These are still important but guards at remote monitoring sites are more important.
  3. Computer security that relies upon antivirus scanners. Viruses and software attacks are only one aspect and the first mover advantage holds here.
  4. Computer security that relies upon system/network configuration or firewalls. This includes full isolation of a network.
  5. Internet transaction security that relies on PKI/PKE encryption. Specifically the PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) portion.
  6. Employee trust that relies upon initial background checks upon hiring. An initial background check has no value 1 year later.

Notice the keyword in this discussion is the word “relies”. For the purpose of security, anything that uses this word relies is flawed. The use of the word “relies” indicates a pivot point in the implementation. As everyone knows a pivot can be worked in two directions, not just the desired direction. Consequently what is needed is a holistic multilayered system that does not rely upon any specific concept. 1
